Google Analytics is a program that provides statistics on how your website is performing. This includes traffic numbers, sources and much more. Over the last several months, Google Analytics has been beta testing a new Universal Analytics and it is now available to everyone.
What is Google Universal Analytics?
Universal Analytics is an upgrade to the classic Google Analytics that improves the way it collects and processes data for your website. This upgrade also includes more analysis tools to help you get a deeper understanding of your website users.
What Universal Analytics Includes
There are many new and improved things that Universal Analytics offers but here are just a few:
- Configuration Options
There are more configuration options available within analytics that do not require updating the tracking code. It will be easier to change referral exclusions, organic search sources, session timeouts and more. - User ID
This User ID feature can associate multiple sessions with a unique ID. This will allow you to track users across multiple devices and sessions to see engagement in one report. - Flexible Data Collection
The new data collection methods will allow for better tracking for any device such as mobile, game consoles and information kiosks.
How to Upgrade to Universal Analytics
The upgrade process includes a couple steps. Before you get started you will want to work with your web developer because the code will need to be changed on every website.
- Transfer Property
Within your analytics account there is a transfer process that you can request. This change can take between 24 and 48 hours to complete.
- Update Tracking Code
Once the transfer is complete you can update the tracking code on your website.
